SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Manager, Student Engagement will provide direct leadership to a team of student services coordinators, including a Coordinator, Student Orientation & Events and a Coordinator, International Engagement to support the orientation, transition, and engagement of the student community. Working with the Dean of Students and other members of the Student Engagement team, the Manager, Student Engagement will develop engagement plans that unify and integrate the diverse first (1st) year student body and create programming that will encourage ongoing engagement and development of students’ Huron identity and commitment throughout their years of study.

The Manager, Student Engagement is an experienced student services professional, guided by clear values and ethics, is adept at building strong relationships within the Student Engagement team and across various Huron departments, and is valued as a trusted advisor. Specifically, the incumbent is responsible for operating with a strategic mindset, getting ahead of complex challenges while seeing to future possibilities and translating them into breakthrough strategies, capitalizing on Huron’s distinct brand.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Operate to develop the engagement portfolio to achieve strategic goals of Huron University, as well as the Student Engagement team.
  • Initiate and develop a collaborative approach to engagement programing, both within the Student Engagement team as well as with various institutional departments and stakeholders.
  • Develop plans, policies, and systems that streamline and increase the effectiveness of the engagement program.
  • Anticipate and respond to trends related to student engagement and retention in the post-secondary environment.
  • Apply knowledge of engagement and retention strategies to develop programming.
  • Oversee all orientation activities (for domestic and international students) and coordinate with the Huron Soph Team (HST), the Huron University College Student Council (HUCSC), faculty, and staff to implement orientation and residence programming.
  • Manage the Student Engagement budget.
  • Respond to crises and change with creative problem-solving skills and strategies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Completed post secondary degree or diploma from an accredited institution;
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in student services, student orientation and programming, or event planning;
  • Minimum one (1) year of demonstrated supervisory experience leading teams;
  • Demonstrated leadership experience and background in collaborating with various stakeholders;
  • Ability to manage resources and achieve goals on time and within approved budget;
  • Demonstrated ability to identify process gaps or areas for improvement, and implement changes for maximum efficiency;
  • Ability to identify and mitigate risks while using sound judgment to appropriately respond;
  • Highly developed skills in oral and written communication, including effective presentation skills;
  • Excellent time management skills and demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize multiple task and meet competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment;
  • Strong ability to orchestrate change management and diplomatic problem-solving with a creative appreciation of academic values and commitment to student development and success;
  • A commitment to diversity and inclusion as an integral component of a quality university experience, coupled with knowledge of current issues around access, equity and success for a diverse student population;
  • Strong ability to assess and evaluate program performance;
  • Demonstrated proactive learning to stay informed of trends, and to anticipate and proactively respond to changes;
  • Knowledge and proficiency of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access).
