Full-time Research Nurse Opportunity in Children’s Health

JOB TITLE: Lead IMPACT Monitor

Minimum education: Registered Nursing License Required.
Minimum experience: Recent experience in a paediatric setting. Experience with healthcare research.

Work hours: Full-Time, during regular working hours.
Reporting to: Site Investigator, Department of Paediatrics.
Work location: Children’s Hospital, LHSC.

Position Summary:

The Canadian Immunization Monitoring Program, Active (IMPACT) is a paediatric hospital-based, nationwide, active surveillance network (in 14 centers) for Vaccine-Preventable Diseases (VPDs) and Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP). IMPACT is administered by the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) with funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC).

The Lead IMPACT Monitor position is located at Children’s Hospital, LHSC. The Lead IMPACT Monitor position provides an excellent opportunity to be part of a national and internationally recognized surveillance system.

The responsibilities of the Lead IMPACT Monitor include, but are not limited to:

Screens and identifies eligible cases; completing required screening and reporting documentation following the proper surveillance pathways.
Conducts surveillance according to standard reporting criteria, in a timely manner and following the guidelines set out in required surveillance documents, such as the Statement of Work (SOW) for VPD and all other application protocols and user manuals for VPD surveillance targets.

Maintains IMPACT documents including all forms and protocols, site Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), as well as center-specific research and hospital required ethics documents.
Communicates and maintains good working relationships with:
The local Investigator. Meets on a regular basis with questions regarding eligibility, case report reviews and miscellaneous items and updates.
Other IMPACT team members, including the data center, CPS Surveillance Manager and the Nurse Monitor Liaison.
The local team of hospital/health center contacts, such as patient care units, hospital laboratories, and infection control staff for the identification of potential cases or to request patient records and code lists for review of possible missed cases.
Other contacts including local and provincial/territorial public health personnel for miscellaneous requirements/questions.
Assists with miscellaneous surveillance activities including the piloting of revised case report forms, user manuals and associated forms.
Provides information on other screening-associated activities, like completing yearly surveys on hospital admissions and testing and admitting practices.
Collaborates with the Canadian Pediatric Surveillance Program (CPSP) for reporting cases of AFP.
Acts as a resource for immunization information for colleagues, patient’s physicians, hospital/health center physicians, other nurses and the general public.
Participates in regular surveillance teleconferences and annual meetings/conferences.
Coordinates the documentation and shipment of specific surveillance isolates/samples where applicable and in collaboration with the appropriate hospital and/or research department laboratories/personnel.
Assists in the orientation of new monitors if required at one's own site in collaboration with the Nurse Monitor Liaison.
Submits required financial claims in a timely manner to the CPS Surveillance Manager.
Provides information and participates, as appropriate, with any additional tasks/external projects as approved by the center Investigator.Attends training sessions on surveillance targets to ensure skills are kept-up-to date.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Registered nurse with current license to practice
Recent experience with the paediatric population
Knowledge of, and familiarity with, healthcare research
Computer skills (Microsoft and internet)
Familiarity with REDCap software

The successful candidate will be highly motivated to initiate and complete tasks independently, takes direction when needed, is flexible in adapting to changing priorities/workloads, is very detail oriented, and maintains confidentiality. Additionally, the successful candidate must have excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
